Clarifying Pond Fish Species
A pond just doesn’t seem to be complete without adding some fish to it. Although one can also have a beautiful pond without them . The nice thing about some of the pond fish species is that they are pretty hardy and will be able to adjust to fluctuations in temperature and water conditions as well. The two necessities of course are going to be able to supply the right amount of oxygen to the water and making sure that there is a filtration system for it.
The first fish that comes to mind when one is looking to inhabit their pond is the goldfish. These are great for ponds that are on the smaller size but you must remember if you’re living in cold climates that you have to bring them in during the winter months and give them a new home in an aquarium.
If your pond is in excess of 500 gallons and at least 18 inches deep then you really can have some choices of types of fish that you want to have. You can have the comets or the shubunkin as these are both a hardy species. Then again if you want to go with the Koi you have that option as well
If you decide that you want the Koi you are going to need a pond that is somewhat bigger. It should be at least over 1,000 gallons and a depth of no less than three feet deep. These are fish that came originally from Japan and have been bred throughout the centuries. They have distinct characteristics about them as to the various types, sizes and colors as well. You may find that these are not going to be a cheap species of fish to buy as there are some varieties that are really in high demand.
You also have to keep in mind that if you have ponds that are going to freeze over with a layer of ice even your most hardy species of fish can suffocate easily because of the gas exchange that takes place. Those species that have been really hardened to extreme climates will go into hibernation and they manage to stay in a dormant stage.
If you’re going to keep the Koi you have got to remember that they will feed on certain plants. So you want to make sure that there is some compatibility here. Also remember that your pond is providing a habitat for your fish species. You want to make sure you do some studying when it comes to providing a natural habitat for your fish. By doing so you will be able to rely on nature to keep the pond in its optimum condition to allow your fish to remain healthy and thrive.
If you need to start resorting to chemicals to keep your water clear see if you can identify why you are having difficulty with the clarity of the water? Perhaps you are over feeding your fish, or debris has been left to rot in the pond. In many cases, people guess at the reasons for murky water and are left exhausted and confused as to why their solutions are not working. Take the time to determine the major issues first and you will be guaranteed to save your time and effort by having the right solution.
